Herbalism is an ancient practice based on the use of plants as 'healers'. Accounts of herbal remedies used to help both people and animals, date back to pre-Biblical times.
You may be surprised to learn that the majority of Earth's population rely heavily on plant medicine for their well-being. The use of herbs to treat disease has again become increasingly popular in North America as people search for alternatives to drug therapies. I think that there is a shift in consciousness towards "prevention" as well as a realization that it's about the quality of life lived.
Herbalism, herbal medicine, herbology or phytotherapy are terms which can be used interchangeably. Herbalism is NOT Homeopathy, Osteopathy, Naturopathy or Reiki ! (that's another conversation)
Not to complicate the topic further, but there are a many 'types' of herbal practitioners; largely dependent upon philosophy and geographical location.
Traditional herbalism is my own personal passion. I make most of the medicine in my 'apothecary' which is largely comprised of local plants. I find it very empowering to teach about 'stepping out the back door to the abundance of the green world'. We have a wealth of medicines to support and nourish every system of our bodies as well as our affect our minds and Spirits.
Perhaps you've enjoyed a cup of tea made from an infusion of peppermint leaves or chamomile flowers ? Perhaps you've heard it's GOOD for you and you like the taste. Did you choose this tea with a "result" in mind?
The simplicity of it all.... The magic !
People are surprised to learn that one or two cups of a "simple" (term for one herb as opposed to a formula) can create a small change or 'result'.
In the example above. these herbs are known to aid digestion and encourage relaxation That's right.. these two plant medicines can affect both the digestion and the nervous system at the same time ! AND many more possible results from those TWO plants are possible.
There's more to it of course, but hopefully this has been helpful.
BASICALLY -- our plant allies are all around us; waiting for us to make use of their healing gifts. HERBALISM is all about HELPING OURSELVES with the support of botanical remedies.
Finding self reliance. Finding peace. Feeling well.
