Sage Medicine is such an important part of my herbal apothecary. When you read on, you will be amazed at the power of this wonderful herbal ally. It never EVER ceases to amaze me, just how many attributes one herb can have to share with us. How ONE herb can offer such a vast and widely varied list of healing qualities!
Do you know SAGE? This is a WONDERFUL herb to get to know.
Salvia officinalis (Garden Sage) is easy to grow. She's a perennial herb and grows all over the world. She over-winters in my garden in Toronto. I grow as much SAGE as I can find room for in my wee urban garden. Friends will tell you -- at the first sign of a sore throat, I am chasing after them with fresh or dried sage with a canning jar and a kettle! Sage infusion recipe here.
We harvest the top 6-8 inches of the Sage plant from early summer, throughout the growing season.

SAGE MEDICINE:
Sage is slightly astringent. It's very good for runny nose conditions.
Sage is an important anti-secretory ally. We use it to decrease sweating and to dry up mom's milk. We use it with any issues of excessive sweating.
It can be a fabulous ally for peri-menopausal women, helping with night-sweats.
Sage is my favourite ally for SORE THROATS. At the first sign of an 'invader', sage tea will help to dispel a sore throat. It is excellent for those who need to give a speech and need extra power in the 'throat area' or for singers, including opera singers who need a range of ability and a healthy throat to reach 'those high notes'!! Basically amazing or any throat inflammation.
Sage is an amazing digestive helper herb. It can stimulate the entire digestive system, with an emphasis on the small intestines and stomach. We use it to diffuse gas and bloating.
It combines well with other herbs that are not as strongly astringent.
Sage is an great help with internal or external bleeding. It's an excellent styptic or hemostatic.
We use Sage with viral infections and worms. It contains thujone helps with both of these issues. Excellent for coughs and asthma issues.
Sage helps with circulation disturbances ~ cold hands n' feet.
Sage is a powerful emmenagogue; provides terrific support for the female reproductive system. Helps with both the 'lack' of menses (amenorrhea) as a stimulating emmenagogue and with painful heavy bleeding (dysmenorrhea) as an anti-spasmodic
Note--> Use in formulations only, up to 25%.
Toxicity and/or Concerns: Contains thujone so continuous use should not exceed 1-2 months
Contraindications: Not recommended in pregnancy or lactation (antigalactagogue).

I didn't know that sage was so useful other than tasting delicious!
Carol Little
Sage is a powerhouse green ally. I always have fresh growing or I dry the leave in fall to have on hand for tea in the winter.
Elaina Newton (@TheRisingSpoon)
Wow, I had no idea sage was such a powerhouse! I should stick some in a pot this spring and grow it on my balcony so I can keep it on hand. In regards to the "appetite stimulant", you think that's part of the reason why stuffing it so dang addicting? LOL.
Carol Little
Well. I hadn't thought abut that re stuffing LOL.. That's funny.
YES. Do grow it. It is hardy and does well in pots too.
Jessica
Sage is so awesome. I always forget about using it. Thanks for the post.
Carol Little
You are welcome. Plant some Jessica! Play with Sage. Fabulous ally.
Megan Stevens

Carol Little
Thanks Megan. Love to share my passion.

I have recommended sage to breastfeeding mamas who have an overabundant supply or (tragically) a mom whose baby is still born or miscarries and her milk still comes in. It's an easy way to dry up supply when you need to.
Carol Little
Yes Daja. That is indeed a traditional use; and very helpful in these situations.
As a sudorific, Sage helps all sorts of secretions to lessen.. night sweats, people who 'over-sweat' etc.
Emily @ Recipes to Nourish
