One of the best winter remedies is so simple. Don't let the simplicity fool you though, as this remedy from years ago is without doubt, one of my "go to" remedies and easy to make with ingredients that are always on hand in my kitchen. Most of us probably have Onions + Garlic and other herbal blends such as sweet curry powder. I love to share winter wellness tips!
Years ago, my friend & mentor Rosemary Gladstar, shared this with her apprentices at her home on Sage Mountain in Vermont. The healing powers of these ingredients should not be underestimated!
The original recipe does have Curry has the 3rd ingredient but it can be left out if not available (or if curry isn't your thing) The turmeric in the mild Curry that I use, offers additional healing components. Substitute with another herb or herbal blend that you find delicious. This remedy is actually quite tasty, and if you can get past the idea of sitting down to a bowl of sautéed onions, do try it. I make it from time to time over the winter months, as a preventative 'immune booster' as a side dish too.
Onions + Garlic
Onions + Garlic Immune Booster
Ingredients
- 2 Onions
- 2-10 cloves of garlic minimum 3 is ideal
- coconut or avocado or olive oil
- 1 tablespoon curry powder (or your favourite herb/herb blend
Instructions

Slice onions and saute in a small amount of olive oil or coconut oil.

Peel garlic and chop.

Add ½ the garlic to the onions when they are translucent.

Toss lightly and stir frequently to avoid burning the garlic.

Add the Curry powder* if using and stir.

Add the remaining garlic.Allow the garlic to heat through and remove the pan from the heat.
Onions and garlic together make such an amazing medicine!

Onions are high in vitamin C, which may help regulate your immune health, collagen production, and iron absorption.
It’s also a powerful antioxidant that could help protect your cells from unstable, damaging molecules called free radicals.
Onions are rich in B vitamins, including folate and vitamin B6. These play key rolesTrusted Source in metabolism, red blood cell production, and nerve function.
Lastly, onions are a good source of potassium, a mineral that may assist us with:
- cellular function
- fluid balance
- nerve transmission
- kidney function
- muscle contraction
The average potassium intake of Americans is less than half of the recommendation of 4,700 milligrams (mg).
Adding onions to your diet is a great way to increase your potassium intake!
The amounts will vary based on how much you want to make!
Normally, I use 1-2 medium sized onions and 1 head (8-10 cloves) garlic.
I add a healthy sprinkle of the mild Curry* powder and a few twists of black pepper.
*recently I've added a small sprinkle of curry and a larger sprinkle of organic turmeric root powder..
This concoction is best eaten warm. The onions are sweet, garlic pungent and the curry flavourful.
This dish, along with a warm bath, perhaps some ginger tea or sage infusion, and a kick-ass immune boost tincture ?

also the black pepper is important to increase absorption of t he tumeric. i use 1/4tsp for each tsp of tumeric i eat. i make broth add tumeric n 1/2tbsp dulse with the pepper to a cup of broth. yum.

i can't have nightshades. Is just straight tumeric just as effective as the curry powder?

Hello Stephanie. Turmeric is an ingredient in 'curry powder'. Curry powder is a blend of different herbs and spices and varies with every region in India. Each home probably makes their curry mix a little differently. Turmeric is the most studied herb these days. It is what gives the curry that gorgeous colour -- I use both but attempt to use turmeric powder (organic) every day. If you are making a curried dish.. use the curry powder. If you want to have more turmeric in you meals, it doesn't taste like a curry powder. Try it.
So.. in answer to your question.. straight turmeric is as effective or MORE effective than a mix of herbs called curry powder.

HI Stephanie ~ You can substitute any herb or spice for the curry powder. It can be straight turmeric, Italian seasoning blend or whatever appeals to you. It is essentially to add another flavour 'level' to this simple dish. It can also be left out.. as the focus is definitely garlic and onions.. Having said that? Turmeric is an excellent supporting herb in this case!
