It's always a great idea to be prepared ~ not a girl scout? Me neither but I am enthusiastic about finding and sharing EASY to make remedies to help you deal with health issues that can pop up. The appearance of a persistent hacking cough can stop us from enjoying our day and often prevents us from having a restful sleep. Here's one 'hacking cough' remedy that I've used for a very long time with success!
For natural, reliable cough relief, try this tea recipe adapted from one recommended years ago by Tieraona Low Dog, M.D. She is definitely one of my favourite teachers and quite an amazing woman. Tieraona is both an herbalist and medical doc practicing in the southwestern USA.
It combines thyme, which alleviates chest congestion and supports respiratory function, along with throat-soothing honey, powerful ginger, anti-viral sage, and vitamin-C-rich organic lemon.
Soothing Cough-Control Tea for that hacking cough:
Herbal tea to soothe that hacking cough
Ingredients
- 2 teaspoon lemon rind organic please!
- ½ teaspoon ginger root fresh
- 1 teaspoon sage leaves fresh or dry
- ½ teaspoon thyme leaves fresh or dry
Instructions
-
Place above ingredients into a glass jar or tea pot
-
Add just boiled water.
-
Cover and steep for 15 minutes.
-
Strain tea, then add the juice of ½ lemon and 1 tablespoon honey (local raw honey is best).
-
Drink two to three cups daily for cough relief.
Recipe Notes
Make from fresh when possible. Keep dried herbs in dark cupboard in glass jars. If possible, keep a jar of both thyme and sage on hand. Your family will thank you.

My recipes tend to be more ‘guidelines’ than precise, as you know if you have been here at Studio Botanica for a while! I attempt to add exact measurements for those who need ‘precision’. In reality, it’s simply the combination of the thyme and sage plus citrus and honey. The measurements don’t need to be exact.
If your pantry doesn’t have organic this or that – Make this tea anyway and buy organic herbs/spices etc. when possible. My ‘italics’ are an attempt to highlight the healthiest choices possible.
I suggest a canning jar because I like to make my tea with a lid and it’s so easy this way. I usually have a 1 litre jar on the kitchen counter just for my teas.
This tea is soothing and quite palatable. I make it during winter months and find great results. One thing I've learned. A remedy can be simple and still powerful. It doesn't need to be fancy to work well!

am so glad you have several share buttons - makes it so much easier to share when it comes from the originator who can offer more recipe explanations than just cutting and pasting. i grow a lot of herbs and have favorite tea combos as well. current favorite mix is oregano-fennel, holy basil [tulsi], stinging nettle and sweet fern. including sweet fern to any combination adds so much body and a subtle sweetness that makes the tea irresistible. i use no sweeteners.
