Horseradish for Sinus Issues? Here's a good 'life hack' to have in your home. Sinus pain due to blocked sinus passages and/or infection is probably the most common ailment for which I have personally used horseradish. Sometimes it can be as straightforward as a quick old-fashioned remedy.
Horseradish for Sinus Issues:
Horseradish "snuff": For the bravest among us!
a definite HELP for Sinus Congestion!
Grate horseradish and take a smidge (¼ teaspoon or so) in your
mouth, holding until the flavour subsides, usually within 30 seconds.
People initially shy away from this treatment, but those with courage often find that blocked mucus loosens and drains, thus relieving the pressure in a very short time. Doing this daily for a few days has resulted in complete clearing of sinus infections for a number of my clients.
According to Richard Mabey, author of The New Age Herbalist,
“Horseradish is a powerful circulatory stimulant with antibiotic properties due to the mustard oil it contains. It is effective for lung and urinary infections because mustard oil is excreted through these channels.”
Horseradish can be incorporated into our daily meals too, which may serve as an alternative idea if the 'snuff' just isn't for you! I have shared some recipes that you may enjoy. Horseradish for Sinus issues is a powerful herbal ally!
Sometimes, it's so dry in our homes that everyone complains of feeling 'stuffed up'. Congested sinuses and stuffy noses contribute to headaches. Here's a way to add the healing power of the plants into a gentle 'steam' which can help to remove some of the dryness and offer relief for congestion.
HERBAL INHALER
The aromas from this herbal infusion can help to clear blocked sinuses and stuffy noses.
2 quarts good quality water
¼-cup fresh or 2 tablespoons dried yarrow
¼-cup fresh or 2 tablespoons dried peppermint
1-tablespoon fresh or 2 teaspoons dried rosemary
1-tablespoon fresh or 2 teaspoons dried thyme
Place the water in a saucepan on the stove. Add all of the herbs. Simmer uncovered over low heat for 30 to 40 minutes. This allows the herbal essences to drift through the house, and helps to combat some of the dryness.. We have rads in our house ~ it's an OLD house. I put dishes of water on the radiators and add anti-viral + anti-bacterial essential oils like eucalyptus, tea tree, sage... there are many!
Back to the 'dampfbad' as it's called in Germany. Don't forget to make a tent with a towel and drape yourself over the gentle steam to help release some of the congestion.
I have also used a crock pot to make this recipe.
In a pinch, I've used a steaming pot of water on the stover, simmering with drops of essential oils to help clear sinus and lungs. My favourites are eucalyptus, basil, ravensara, tea tree, lavender.. there are many!
Note: During the period of time when we are dealing with congestion, it's best to avoid mucus-forming foods when possible. Most of us know about avoiding dairy. There's actually a lot of 'inflammatory' + mucus forming foods.

Sinus issues and the neti pot:
A neti pot is a small container designed to rinse mucus or debris from your nasal cavity. People use a
neti pot to treat symptoms of sinus issues, allergies or colds. I admit it took me a while to get 'the hang of it' but have used mine for years now when indicated, with success.
Remember, if making your own saltwater solution, to use sterilized or distilled water (or boil and cool tap water)
How to use your neti pot:
Tilt your head sideways over a sink and place the spout of the neti pot in the upper nostril.
Breathe through your mouth and at the same time, pour the saltwater solution into your upper nostril.
This allows the water to enter the upper and drain through the lower nostril. It feels a bit odd but is painless and very helpful. Repeat with head turned to the other side. Breathe slowly throughout process.
After use, rinse the neti pot with the same sterilized water and allow to dry before storage.
Do you use a neti pot? I have one like this one below:

I love the towel over the head method, our mom always had us do that as children when we were congested. I bet your formula is way better than my moms though. Hopefully I won't need it, but bookmarking just in case...you never know! Thanks Carol!

This is on my list of things to try next time I have sinus congestion. I hate feeling sick and like my head is so heavy, but stay away from OTC meds and tend to just suffer through ailments. Thank you for sharing what you use.

I use essential oil of oregano 5 drops in a gallon of water and that will be my water source for the day. I mix it into protein shakes , tea, coffee, and cook with it. In a couple days I have no sinus issues or infection. I haven't had to deal with any hay fever this year at all.
