Herb Gomasio is one of my favourite condiments to make and have on hand all year long!
We need salt in our diets but there are many of us who prefer to focus on increased flavour with limited salt intake. This 'template' of my version of Gomasio, offers a lot of room for creativity. Make small amounts initially so that you can experiment. This recipe is more of a template than an actual recipe and I hope you find it inspiring!!
Do you crave home-made or 'hand-crafted' DIY condiments to grace your table that are simple and quick to make but offer great flavour and can help to cut down on salt consumption?
This is a great place to start -- Less Salt AND More Flavour!!
What is Gomasio?
Gomasio or “gomashio” is a flavour blend commonly sprinkled on rice dishes in Japan. Gomasio translates as “salt and pepper”. Traditional gomasio is made with black sesame seeds and white sea salt!
In my mind, it's a blend of good quality salt paired with seeds and specific herbs to create various flavour profiles. You can change this up to suit your needs, your family’s tastes and any food sensitivities!

Here's the 'base' of one I made recently. It contains sesame seeds and flaked salt and a wonderful mix of seeds and 'Hemp Hearts'.
Then I added dried calendula flowers, borage flowers, red clover and nasturtium flowers too.. SO colourful. TASTY!!

Try one with Italian herbs + flowers. Rosemary is another wonderful pungent herb to try in this mixture!
Use in place of table salt to season your meals!
Especially tasty with soup, veggies, rice, salad, on wraps or sandwiches, atop pizza or tossed with popcorn.
